The Fred Perry Memorial Trophy
Fred Perry pictured with a young Rob
Lewis during a concert in the bandstand on Jubilee Park taken in the late
1980's/early 1990's.
Fred Perry was an active member of Whitchurch Band for many years and taught numerous young players, some of whom are still in the band to this day, including current Musical Director Simon Griffiths. It was Fred's tenacity that forged an inbred love of performing into players such as Simon, and made him the player he is today.
In later life Fred joined the local council, rising eventually to become Mayor of the town on more than one occasion. No mean feat it has to be said!
To everyone's sad loss, Fred and his wife Beryl were tragically killed in a road accident on 10th November 2001. So that their lives would not be forgotten, the band purchased a silver cup to be presented to a member of the band (playing and non playing) each year who has shown particular commitment to the brass banding movement over the preceding twelve months, whether it be through fundraising, encouragement given to others, determination to improve, or any other action which is particularly worthy of merit.
The band
could not think of a more befitting way to honour the life of a man who
gave so much to encourage a musical heritage to the town of Whitchurch. Until
his dying day, Fred still held a genuine love and enthusiasm for brass band
music, and especially the music of
Whitchurch Band.
